Remember back in March 2015, almost one year ago, I wrote this article on James Bay shortly after I discovered his music by incident. I named the article “Will James Bay be the biggest shooting star in music this year?“. And even to this day I think I was right with my forecast, although this year’s Grammy for best new artist went to pop star and songwriter Meghan Trainor.

When it comes to awards I guess you still need to remind yourself that it’s just a decision based on a certain group of people with a specific taste. Meghan Trainor is also undoubtably one of the biggest break out stars of last year with amazing pop music writing skills and a good voice, but having said that to me there’s just no comparison to the greatness of what James Bay is capable of musically and technically. To me his songs are way more captivating, emotional and relatable. Also I read in a lot of blogs and youtoube comments that the majority of people were rooting for Tori Kelly, also an up and coming musician who first found fame on season 9 of American Idol. Did you see her and James Bay’s Grammy performance? I’m gonna post it below so you can watch it if you haven’t seen it yet.

This link probably won’t be online for too long so be quick and watch the performance starting at minute 02:00!

So what do you think of it? Tori Kelly is a beautiful and talented girl and I admire her drive and compassion, because it’s definitely not easy to be cut at a stage of a competition show just before you enter the group of finalists on American Idol and not be defeated and continue trying to fight for your career in music and as a singer, but I gotta be honest with you guys to me she just can’t compete with James Bay and at the end of the performance I as a watcher was left with the feeling of a screaming battle rather than a singing duett. Anyway, I get that the grammy people wanted to create an iconic and unique moment in music history, but all I’m saying is that I think he would have sounded better if he just were alone, that’s all.

Today I stumbled accross this great feature of James Bay including an interesting and informative interview with the British singer. Eventhough we already know he didn’t win the best new artist Grammy, it’s still worth watching!

Slaayyy TayTay slayy!! That’s the first thing that came to my mind after watching her acceptance speech. I’m sure you’ve read it on the news that Kanye West called Taylor Swift a “Bitch” in his new song “Famous”. Well seems like Kanye should have picked another battle since Taylor is one fierce and unapologetic pop star who knows how to get back at the rapper.

While accepting her second “Album of the Year” Grammy in a row Taylor seized the moment to share some empowering thoughts with the world.

Without mentioning Kanye West’s name she stated the following “And as the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to the young woman out there, there are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you will look around and you will know it was you and the people who love you who put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”

So, I guess it’s your turn now Kanye! What’s good? What’s he gonna do next? I’ll be following the story for you! Watch Taylor’s whole acceptance speech below and let me know what you think! Are you team TayTay or team Kanye?

If you’re Beyoncé fan I’m sure you know that she’s been a member of the girl group Destiny’s Child. Through the years there have been some changes in the group and eventually they ended up being a trio, before Beyoncé went on to conquer the music industry by herself. Farrah Franklin used to be a member of the group for six months and a youtuber named djvlad offered her a platform to tell her version of the story and set the record straight.

In this case I’m not taking any side for nobody, but what I will say that if it was true that Beyoncé and her father stepped on other people in order to push Beyoncés career, I wouldn’t be surprised. I assume that you have to be a cut-throat kinda person to be able to get to the position where she’s now and most importantly to maintain in that status.

Anyway, here’s the interview with Farrah Franklin. Whatch it and share your opinion with me in the comments section!

So the big question to me after somebody won America’s Next Top Model is: What’s next to come for them? Where will they take their career? Last Top Model’s winner from cycle 22 happened to be Nyle DiMarco and as you might know he’s been the show’s first deaf contestant. On his instagram account I saw that his spread with Nylon Magazine just came out recently, which was part of the winner’s prize.

A couple of days ago this campaign that features Nyle advertising a yet unknown sports brand called “GripBell” came out. Take a look!

I guess it’s not easy to have a real career in fashion with a background from America’s Next Topmodel, but there are a few examples who are having a successful modeling career. For example Leila Goldkuhl from cycle 19 who just recently landed a campaign with Givenchy. Yeah, that’s a pretty big deal. Take a look!

Anyway, with the right attitude and most importantly a passion and talent for modeling you obviously can go very far. And as far as Nyle’s career is concerned it’s still unsure what he’ll make out of the winning title but I wish him all the best and I’ll be following his career for you guys. That’s all!

Today we’re talking about online reputation and strategies on how you can improve your digital mirror. As it goes for real life situations companies and people of public interest have to be aware of their brand and what values the public opinion associates them with. And based on that it can improve or harm your business in a big way. Since Social Media’s takeover terms like shitstorm, virality, likes, reaches, content marketing, advertorials, sponsored posts and facebook algorithm are things some of us should be dealing with on the daily basis, but many companies struggle to juggle all that on top of their everyday business tasks. And that’s exactly the moment where my friend Iwona Laub sees her chance to get involved. And Iwona is not just the next best person who randomly promises to elevate your online reputation, there’s so much more to her. Let’s break it down!

Born to solve problems

Iwona never shyed away from solving a problem. If I had to discribe her digital branding advising company iwonalaub.at in three words it would be business, boldness and badassery. So why is that? Because Iwona Laub has always been a big thinker who never let herself be limited by others and was always eager to combine her ideas with her strong business sence. Iwona Laub is one of the boldest people I came accross. With her internalized unapologetic attitude she’s got the talent to win people over. And on top of all that comes her badassery and I’m telling you that Iwona’s my kinda friend because she says it like she means it, straight no chaser!

So not long ago I sat down with Iwona Laub to ask her some questions on about how she’s decided to enter the online communication and branding bizz!

Let’s get right into it, you’re about to start your own business as a self employed digital brand advisor. For people who have no idea about what that is, can you explain your new profession and who do you advise?

Basically I am helping companies and start-ups to improve their online repuation, meaning, not only do I help them to improve their Social Media apparences and  its content, I also advise them when the shit hit the fan. I establish a crisis plan and various methods on how to deal with bad comments. On the other hand I am also helping them to connect with social influencers.

How did you even come up with the idea to go into that direction businesswise? What’s your professional background?

I have been working in Social Media for a while and then I have been writing for a newspaper. In this time I was only the observer of what was happening. In my maternity leave I decided to go back to my roots and be creative again. I came to the conclusion that I cannot be the observer, because I’m a creator. I want to be part of a creative process and it’s important to me to help people changing the way they see their own brand.

As you mentioned before one of your services that you offer is helping companies, bloggers and brands to deal with shitstorms. How would you define this term and what kind of strategies are there to work against that dynamic?

This service is to be understood as an acute and urgent service. Sometimes companies are not very well when it comes to dealing with negative sentiment. The strategies are different and cannot be explained in a few words. It really depends on the company, the brand, the branch they are in and also on the people working for the company. There are a lot of things to be considered before deciding what to do. Usually this needs to be done pretty fast, because in times of Social Media the customer and user is used to get a fast response to everything. This is a challenge, but it is what I consider myself to be good at.

Is there a way to avoid shitstorms in the first place?

No. I mean, of course there are things to avoid, but nevertheless it can happen to anyone. Ther is only risk minimization, but not an avoidance strategy.

If you think about it, what is it about that field that interests you the most? What is it that you’re really passionate about when it comes to communication brands and digital reputation?

I really love to solve problems. I think of myself as a “fixer”. I want to be someone who people call to fix things when they are about to get broken. The most interesting thing is to see how incapable of acting people become when they don’t know what to do. They have to make decisions and I help them to make those decisions.

Do you have any advice for upcoming bloggers hwo to enter this oversaturated market and you know how to develop a strategie that makes you get noticed in a positive way?

I think the most important thing to consider before starting a blog is not how to become famous or important. It’s about passion and to me it comes down to two important questions: What do you love and why should people care about what you have to say? If you ahve the feeling that your topic is relevant – no matter what it is – then you’re good to go. Ther is no strategy, you have to find your own path. That’s why I also help people with blogs and try to find a way that suits for sharing their unique content – whether it is a politician, a journalist or a blogger.

Why do you think it is important that companies and people in general start paying more attention to their online repuation?

Some things go down almost unnoticed and people will forget about certain things. But those who know about it, will always remember it. And they won’t remember that you did something wrong. They will remember what you did to make it okay again, how you were reacting to negativity and how you dealt with stressful situations. So of course a company should have a plan, a strategy and a philosophy behind dealing with reputation – the good or the bad. I consider it as an investment for their future.

So let’s say I got a problem and I’m looking for help. I stumble accross your website iwonalaub.at and see that your services include exactly what I was searching for. What’s the next step?

You can contact me either via e-mail (hello@iwonalaub.at) or you can just call me, my number is also to be found on the website. If it’s urgent, a call is the better way, but I am reading my emails pretty frequently during the day and I can call you back as soon as possible. I am also on Facebook and Twitter, if that’s your preferred way to communicate.

In this brand new performance of “Blank Space” Taylor Swift dishes all the reasons that inspired her to write the smash hit and explains that the media who created this alleged fake maneating persona about her and so she went along with that played with that image.

Hands down, it was a very smart move of her to use that negativity about her persona and by mocking her own image at that time she totally refuted her man collecting reputation and at the same time made hell of a lot of money. At the same time she also proved that yet again she’s a very skilled singer songwriter with a lot of confidence. But does this confidence translate in the right way? I don’t know. You be the judge! Roll it!

What’s your favourite song off of 1989? Let me know in the comments below!

Did you all have a good start into 2016? I surely did as I was partying until the early dawn. If you payed attention to your social media outlets in the past days, I’m sure many of you noticed how different some of your friends or followers are dealing with the maidenly New Year. Some of you might have shared your favourite memories of 2015 and reflected over the past year or posted your goals for the new year. I’m convinced that speaking about your aspirations out loud is the first step to realisation.

Having said that as important as it is in my opinion to reflect over things that have happened in your life, there will always be other people who eventually disagree and make fun of those who are determined to make a change in their lives. At the very end of this post I’m going to tell you why even those kind of people are important in your life and how you can deal with behaviour like this in your everyday life.

But firstly I want to share some advices with you that are as well my very own personal aspirational goals for the new year.

  1. Don’t delay things you want to do: It is such a bad habit to delay your tasks that you’ve had in mind starting, continuing or finalizeing. I really need to work on that matter, because there are just so many things that I want to realize. One way to get a step closer in solving this dilemma is to set priorities. I sometimes catch myself feeling a little stressed even just by the thought of writing a to do list, but in the back of my mind I obviously know that this is the way to go. Because having an overview enables you to set priorities form most important to least important. Another reason why delaying stuff sucks is that as far as my experiences go, you’re way more productive when you put an idea into action when it’s still fresh, rather than telling yourself, you’re gonna do it when you’ve got the time. And just in case you really, really don’t have the time to do it immediately, at least take out some seconds and write down the most important keywords for your task, which brings me to my next point …
  2. Consume actively: Do you know the feeling of having survived another exhausting day at work and don’t wanting to do anything anymore but indulging yourself with some random youtube videos for relaxation? Well if you do know that, then you’re my people. And you know what? That has to stop and I’m gonna tell you why. And I’m not saying that you shouldn’t allow yourself to continue watching your beloved youtube content, netflix series or whatever, but I’m challenging you and myself to do the following: get yourself a notebook and write down in keywords just a few words or phrases that inspire you. And what you will do with it in the future is really up to you, but at least you have the most important thoughts of your consumption in one book. I’ve lost count on how many videos I’ve bookmarked in order to watch them later because I thought of them being important or inspirational and I rarely re-watch them, since there’s just too much information coming out every single day that I feel the urge of reading. So from now on my online behaviour will change and no important ideas will go by the board anymore!
  3. Turning a negative into a positive: This one sounds so chiché it almost hurts, but guess what? Have you ever thought about what it really means? I heard Oprah once say “Experiences are either a lesson or a blessing” and either way it’s important! Why? Because it’s essential to give every experience the space in order to grow as a person. I don’t know why but I’m convinced that the most successful people in wichever field they ended up working now have experienced some real lows. And to me it’s not about avoiding those lows since they are inevitable anyway, but what counts is how you deal with them when they happen. And that leads me to one of my favourite words ever: perseverance. Success to me also means overcoming obstacles and to experience a point of view of a negative situation can be a true eye opener and that wider can help you avoiding making the same mistake twice in an even more important situation. Another way how to interprete “Turning a negative into a positive” is to unapologetically go with your strengths even though it might be at first feel strange, intimidating and scary. There might be things about you that make you feel different or make you stand out and you personally percieve them as a negative since it differs from the norm. But guess what, success comprises revolutions. So don’t hold back anymore about things you want to do in life, just because you might be afraid of what other people might think of it. And since this way of thinking is vital to me it lead me to create an own pulletpoint.
  4. Don’t be afraid of being othered: Don’t throw rotten tomatos at me by emphasizing that we as human beings come in all different shapes, sizes, skin colors and personalities. And don’t get it twisted, what we as a society understand as being the norm is a construction. It’s not necessary a natural given thing, but we make it our reality by living up to the standards and expectations that we created and established for ourselves and the people surrounding us. As there is a total lack of media representations that stand for alternatives outside of the values that we consider as being normal, I’m sure that the number of people holding back of what they want to do workwise or on a personal scale is enormously high. And I challenge you and myself to not be afraid of letting peer preasure dowse your aspirations anymore. Standing out might not be a bad thing after all, since being memorable can eventually be really helpful. Give yourself the space to express the way you feel independently from possible critical voices. The days of striving to be everybody’s darling are over!
  5. Authenticity: Well, if you’re reading this and think of it as being nice and all that but you can’t implement these advices  because you lack selfconfidence. One of the most important questions I came accross Janet Mock’s speech regarding self confidence is the following “Who am I to myself?” Who are you to yourself? How do you see yourself? If you ask yourself that question and really be honest with yourself, you’ll get to know yourself a little better. And knowing things always help to achieve more assurness including towards yourself. I honestly believe in the power of creating a self. Nobody but you knows what’s best for yourself.
  6. Listen to your gut feeling: It’s vital to listen to your gut and don’t ignore what it tells you to do. I believe that if the heart and the brain give you two different answers, listen to your gut even if it offers you a third option. I’ve watched many interviews of successful people and they all emphasized how important it was for them and their career that they listened to their feeling inside their gut.
  7. Set yourself goals: People always say having goals in life is super important, you need to have them in your life. But why is the question? Why do we actually need goals in your life? The answer is so simple and I will never forget the moment my good friend told me that story. We need to set goals in our lives in order to be able to make the right decisions to achieve those goals. Setting goals makes it very easy for us to make the right decisions.
  8. Prove people wrong: Let’s face it, life is not only about setting goals, living an authentic life and all that. Yeah, implementing those things in your work scale might affect your career in a positive way but sometimes you just want to give up and start over. Before you do that, take some time off to really think about what it is that you want and then you’ll be able to collect yourself again and think about all those people who laughed at your New Year’s Resolutions and didn’t believe you can do it, think of telling them in your head “I have one thing to say to you, I’m gonna prove you wrong!”

As some of you might have seen on my Instagram account, I’m a huge fan of reminiscing about the past year, making New Year’s Resolutions for 2016 and just in general reflect over things and walk down 2015’s memory lane. In order to sum the year up properly in a classic Yokemara manner, I came up with several categories about things that happened in this year’s pop culture. Roll it!

Comeback of the year

Hello?? To me this one is quite obvious: Welcome back Adele! She came back from nowhere, and surprised us yet again with her writing skills and her unique voice. Even though I have to say I like the song “Hello” and I like Adele, I sometimes catch myself questioning the hype. Don’t get me wrong, I like Adele but we would be living in another world if Amy was still with us. Having said that, the record breaking and cross-generational pop phenomenon Adele still deserves the title “Comeback of the year” in my opinion, because she just slayed this year like nobody else and brought back the singing into pop music, if you know what I mean. To read more about Adele follow the link to this post and you’ll get to watch my favourite interviews with her.

Letdown of the year

Ughh, where do we start? There have just been too many to nail them down to one. One of the biggest disappointments of 2015 was Tyra Banks’ highly anticipated return to daily TV talk in “FABLife” followed by her decision to leave her own show after only two months due to her busy schedule. It wasn’t too long ago, early September to be precise, that I’ve been super excited about the FABlife to finally air on TV. Without Tyra as a host I won’t be watching though. Moving on …

… to the most disappointing movie in 2015: The Hunger Games – Mockinjay Part 2. Guys, I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in this movie. I haven’t read the books but I just disliked a lot about this movie, especially the ending of it. All I want to say is that the last part of this epos just ruined the whole trilogy for me. What a bummer!

Musicwise I hate do admit that but it’s you, Lana del Rey! Her 2015 album “Honeymoon” was released and nobody seemed to care which is probably the worst thing that can happen to an artist. Her new music video “High by the Beach” has a lousy 37 million views. Where are the times when Lana used to be queen? Remember when we were mesmerized by “Born to Die” (which has over 200 million views by the way). Anyway, please don’t let us down in 2016, Lana!

Celeb of the year

In my opinion there’s gonna be three people who inspired me and I was fascinated by. Starting off with the courageous Caitlyn Jenner who’s been criticized and made fun of loads of people back in the days where she used to live as Bruce Jenner, but even to this day this day some people discriminate against Caitlyn. It’s been several years now that I’ve spent doing research about identity building and educating myself about gender spectrum theories since I think it’s very interesting and that our society still has to learn a lot about accepting each other while expressing individuality.

Caitlyn Jenner pushed the dialogue about the way we talk about being trans to the next level. I truely have been fascinated by her story and found it utterly courageous of her wanting to live her true self at this point of her life and at the same time being an advocate of acceptance.

Take a look!

I was shocked when I first found out that cycle 22 of my most favourite TV show of all time “America’s Next Top Model” was coming to an end. Eventhough FABLife was a total flop I’m still routing for Tyra to see what she’ll come up with next. Anyway, in my opinion Nyle DiMarco was a well deserved winner of the last ANTM cycle. He happens to be deaf and crowning Nyle as the last winner of ANTM plays well into the messages that Tyra was always eager to promote. “Expanding the definition of beauty” and “Never take NO as an answer”. I’m definitely gonna be following the story and see where Nyle’s career will go!

There are plenty of daily talkshows out there but there’s only one Wendy Williams and believe me she knows how to tell stories! I’ve been follwing Wendy for year’s now and you can tell that she’s getting more and more comfortable in becoming America’s daytime talk show queen. I think 2015 has been her most successful year so far and I can’t wait to see what stories Wendy is going to tell us in 2016!

Best Non-Scandal of the year

Too many to sum them up in words, so I’d rather let the Gif’s do the talking: Why were Kylie Jenner’s lips such a huge discussion? I mean if we’re already talking about the lips can we please talk about the rest of the face as well? And then we could have a discussion about beauty standards of teenagers as well. Just sayin …

Ughhh remember the time when your timeline was filled with the infamously famous dress?

Gif via here

Why did we all talk about left shark again? And do you blame me if I still think it’s funny?

Gif via here

Remeber when this woman named Rachel Dolezal came on the scene and told everybody that she doesn’t identify as being white? Leave Rachel alone!

Gif via here

Or when Kanye West annouced that he’s gonna be running for president in 2020?

Scandal of the year

After Stephen Collins ruined “7th Heaven” forever and confessed to child molestation in 2014, it was Bill Cosby who caused a lot of headlines in 2015 or shall we sais alleged victims who accused him of sexual assault. The number of alleged victims who speak out publicly seems to grow every mimute as by now there are over 50 women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault. For more detailed information follow this link.

Worst Hashtags of the Year

The worst hashtags of the year definitely go out to every hashtag that ends with -porn. I truely dislike all the following hashtags: #skyporn, #foodporn, #shoeporn … I mean what do you mean by that? I don’t even know if these porn hashtags are an invention of 2015 but can we please stop using them in 2016? Since when did people start using something they love, adore or affects them  emotionally with porn?

Movie of the year

I’m still in the “No Star Wars” vakuum, because I still haven’t seen it yet. And I can’t wait until I’m finally going to watch it next week and leave this trap because I can’t take it any longer! And since I haven’t seen Star Wars yet, I don’t dare to speak out about the best movies of the year. Other than that I really didn’t see a lot of movies that really wowed me this year.

Series of the year

Hands down – I think the best series of 2015 is Sense 8 by the Wachowski siblings. If you haven’t seen it, watch it and you won’t regret it! Literally everybody who I have been talking to about that series has watched the whole season within under one week! So if you’re bored and look out for a new series to watch, Sense 8 is a good start into 2016!

Song of the year

I’m so bad in making decisions, so it’s gonna be a list of a couple of songs that I liked this year with a short explanation on why  they became my soundtrack of 2015:

Adam Lambert – Another Lonely Night

This song much reminds me of a very special time and motivated me to persevere and continue doing what I love to do. I used to listen to it everytime I stepped out the door, starting the day with a positive vibe!

Miley Cyrus – No Love without Freedom

I mean I was already obsessed with Miley when she belted out “When I look at you“, but the older she got the better she became in my opinion. This Dido cover is one of my absolute favourite songs that Miley sang, because the lyrics go so well with the melody!

James Bay – Let it go

James Bay is definitely one of the most successful newcomers of 2015 and there’s a reason to it! His music speaks for itself.

Justin Bieber – Sorry

Let’s face it – this is the first Justin Bieber song I acutally like. Lately I’ve been to an epic Christmas after party and they played it at least four times, so I kinda felt forced into liking the song until I eventually ended up obsessing over it! If somebody told me in 2014 I actually appreciated listening to a Justin Bieber song, I wouldn’t have believed that person.

Album of the year

Miley & the dead petz. You can throw rotten tomatos as much as you want, but I stick to my words. I love the 80ies vibe of the entire album and I think Miley never sounded better. A lot of songs for example “Cyrus Skies“, “Tiger Dreams“, “Evil but a Shadow” remind me of Lana del Rey and what she could have done, if she had managed to catch up with today’s sound.
